竹刀 Shinai is a reflection of yourself as a sword.
Shinai has been used as the essential equipment of Kendo since the 19th century as a replacement for wooden swords for practice. Shinai is built safe to use as it is flexible and strong. Longer than the Japanese sword as it is aimed at the training and competition. Quality-wise, well built with 4 panels of bamboo strips bundled with leather handle cover/strips and the cap tensioned with a string. Shinai has various sizes from kids to adults according to the growing up process.
It is said that Sword is a reflection of yourself. In Kendo, we regard Shinai as Sword and treat it as such with respect. Having said that, we need to take care of our own Shinai and its usage.
All Japan Kendo Renmei (Headquarter of Kendo) reminds us of the following basic:
Place Shinai left-hand side when we sit/stand.
-Do not walk over Shinai.
-Do not attach the tip of Shinai to the floor when standing.
-Do not use it as a clutch, lean on it or put it on the shoulder.
-Do not use Shinai if you find the breakage.
-Do not use Shinai other than Kendo training.
-Do not roll around, step or break.
It is recommended to put Shinai in the Shinai bag when carrying around.
Basically never mack around with Shinai. Shinai has been used as the essential equipment of
