我以外皆我師(ware igai mina ga shi): Miyamoto Musashi(1584 – June 13, 1645) left the word which means "everyone, everything is my teacher except myself"
This is a platform of Kendo. In Kendo, we express our sincere gratitude towards teachers and other players by saying "Onegaishimasu!"( I am here to learn from you. Please teach me.) at the beginning of the training. This humble thought of appreciation is extended to our parents, children, family members, friends, training venue, and just about anyone, anything that we sometimes take for granted. Regardlessly, we learn from each other. We say to each other "Arigatou gozaimashita!"( thank you very much) at the end of the training.
We bow when entering/exiting the training venue(Dojo) to pay respect to Kamiza(upper seat) where the Kendo spirit/guardian deity resides to look after the safety and improvement of our training. Again we show our gratitude for the availability of the Dojo.
In the Kendo match, for instance, it is regarded as a disrespectful and inconsiderate attitude when the winner makes "Guts Pose" or yale for the victory which can be seen in other types of "Martial Arts" around the world nowadays. In Kendo, if it happens the win will be canceled immediately. That's one of the differences between Japanese Budo and so-called "Martial Arts".
We bow to each other to show respect at the beginning and end of the training. 剣道は礼に始まり礼に終わる。
